Pedestrian Accidents

California is home to many cities and destinations where walking is not only popular; it is preferred. Unfortunately, despite more attention to the fact that pedestrian traffic is increasing, lawmakers and automakers have not found a way to prevent pedestrian accidents from occurring.

Sadly, each year, around 75,000 people are killed in the United States in pedestrian accidents on sidewalks, in crosswalks, and near roadways.

At Zarabi Law, we believe the number of pedestrian accidents in California is far too high. Our goal in protecting accident victims is to deter drivers from committing these heinous acts. By holding drivers accountable and, at the same time, getting victims the compensation that they deserve, we hope to be a small part in reducing pedestrian accidents.

California Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Sadly, California leads the nation in the number of pedestrian accidents and deaths each year. In Los Angeles alone, pedestrian fatalities have increased by more than 80% since 2015. Current pedestrian fatality rates are the highest they have been in decades.

There are a few reasons why pedestrian accidents occur so frequently. One of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents in California is distracted drivers. Distracted drivers become distracted for many reasons, none of which are worth the lives that they risk. Pedestrian accidents commonly involve:

  • Talking on the phone
  • Texting while driving
  • Eating or drinking
  • Adjusting the radio or GPS
  • Driving under the influence

Another factor in fatal pedestrian accidents is speed. The vehicle’s speed will determine how likely it is that the pedestrian will survive the collision. For example, at 20 miles-per-hour (mph), a pedestrian has a 90% survival rate. At 40 mph, however, the pedestrian-only has a 20% survival rate.
