Distracted drivers become distracted for many reasons, none of which are worth the lives that they risk. Pedestrian accidents commonly involve:

- Texting while driving
- Eating or drinking
- Adjusting the radio or GPS
- Driving under the influence
Another factor in fatal pedestrian accidents is speed. The vehicle’s speed will determine how likely it is that the pedestrian will survive the collision. For example, at 20 miles-per-hour (mph), a pedestrian has a 90% survival rate. At 40 mph, however, the pedestrian-only has a 20% survival rate.
